SALKANTAY TREK TO MACHUPICCHU

If we talk about trekking routes, this route is one of the most frequented by lovers of adventure in Cusco. This road will take you through wild landscapes, you will walk through high points to more than 4600 meters above sea level, next to snowy mountains and cloud forests of the high jungle, you will pass through rural towns and also will share your path with horses and muleteers who will be doing the same route and you will have to sleep in tents to finally reach Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu town, where you will spend the night and the next day tour Machupicchu as an explorer.
DAY 1: CUSCO – CHALLACANCHA – SORAYPAMPA
From Cusco we will depart very early in our transport to the town of Mollepata, here we will register and continue to the town square to make some purchases that will need to start the trekking. Then we will continue to the village of Challacancha, here where we will begin our trek of three hours until the first camp in Soraypampa, here we will have lunch and take a nap, then go to visit the Humantay lagoon and its turquoise waters,it will take around an hour of ascent, this walk will serve to acclimate and be prepared for next days.
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA -HUAYRACMACHAY – COLLPAPAMPA.
Get ready! Today’s walk will be longer and more demanding
After having breakfast we’ll start the ascent for a climb that lasts about 3 or 4 hours until reach the highest point. The Abra or pass of the Salkantay at 4650 masl. From this place you will have a spectacular view of the Salkantay Mountain., Following the ancestral tradition we will make an offering in honor of the Apu Salkantay, a deity from ancient times. Then we’ll continue the path descending another two hours until reach the place of our lunch in the hamlet of Huayracmachay. Afterwards we’ll continue the journey for 3 or 4 hours more, downhill, here you’ll be witness how the landscape change, leaving behind the mountain and going into the high forest with its characteristic cloud forests, where the climate will be warmer. Finally we will arrive at the camp area in the sector of Colpapampa, where you can take a hot shower, while we prepare your dinner.
DAY 3: COLPAPAMPA – PLAYA SAHUAYACO
After breakfast we’ll begin to walk through the jungle,here you’ll find variety of plants, small streams and waterfalls, below the valley we can see varieties of tropical fruits and crops of coffee and Coca. This last section will take five hours of descent with some ups and downs until the town of Playa Sahuayaco where we’ll have lunch, here the transport will take us to the town of Santa Teresa, where we can enjoy the thermal baths of Cocalmayo, Finally it will transport you to the camping area to have dinner and rest.
DAY 4: SANTA TERESA – HiDROELECTRICA – MACHUPICCHU PUEBLO.
At sunrise awaits our last breakfast prepared by our cook, then continue with the last stretch of walk to Machupicchu Pueblo for them we will go on transport to the “Hidroelectrica” sector, where we will register and start the journey of three hours average, walk to the side of the railway, making stops to appreciate the landscape and its surroundings, arriving in the afternoon to the town popularly known as “Aguas Calientes”, here you will install in the reserved accommodation and will have the rest of the day free to be able to have lunch in a restaurant local and rest.
DAY 5: MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO
Machu Picchu awaits us today!
In the morning, after breakfast we will go to the bus station to ascend to the main access to Machupicchu, if you want to walk you will have to start much earlier. Remember that is included only one way. Once you are in the main entrance of the Sanctuary, we’ ll start the tour of the Archaeological Complex of Machupicchu in the company of our private guide who will tell you the stories of this important Inka enclosure and will take you to places and sectors such as: the Temple of the Sun, the Intiwatana, the Temple of the Condor, etc. When the guide has finished, you will have free time to explore on your own the places that interest you most. When you think it is the right time, you will have to board your bus back to the town where you can have lunch at a local restaurant and wait for your train to return to Cusco. Finally you will have to be half an hour before at the local station to board the train that will take you to Ollantaytambo, where the transportation will be waiting for you to return to your hotel in Cusco.
